The 6% Project

One matching engine to bring all dogs home.

A nonprofit platform that matches shelter dogs to the right families, and handles the logistics in between.

6%

About 320,000 dogs were euthanized in U.S. shelters in 2025, according to Shelter Animals Count. Not because America does not want dogs: roughly 8.2 million are acquired every year.

Best Friends Animal Society calculates that if about 1 in 17 of those households chose a shelter dog instead of a breeder or a pet store, the country could be no kill. That is six percent. The name is the mission.

Looking for a dog

Other sites hand you a search box and a wall of photographs. A photograph cannot tell you whether a dog can be left while you work, or has ever met a cat. Answer a few questions about the week you actually have, and we will show you dogs who fit it, and tell you who said so.

Find your future best friend

158 dogs from Milo Foundation in the Bay Area. About four minutes, and no application at the end.

Volunteer to foster or transport

Capacity runs out when a foster cannot be found in time, and a twenty minute drive to a vet appointment is often the thing nobody can fill. Tell us once what you could do and when, and local rescues can reach you.

Start your profile

One profile instead of one per rescue. You set the distance and how often you hear from us, and your name stays hidden until you say yes to something.

What we are building

The dogs exist and the families exist. What is missing is the infrastructure between them.

Matched, not searched

A short, warm questionnaire about how you actually live, then dogs who fit that life. Breed explains about 9% of how an individual dog behaves. How you spend a Saturday explains more.

A standing list, not a plea

Capacity runs out when a foster cannot be found in time, and today that search is a social media post and whoever happens to see it. We are building a shared, current list of fosters and drivers that every rescue in a region can draw on.

No new data entry

We read from the software rescues already use. Nothing to upload, no second profile to keep current, and listings stay theirs.

If you run a rescue or shelter

You are not being asked to enter your dogs again, or to maintain anything new. We read from the system you already keep, your listings stay yours, and you can disconnect and take everything with you.

We are starting in the San Francisco Bay Area and would like to talk to the organizations doing this work here. If that is you, please get in touch.

Who is behind it

The 6% Project is led by Asha R. Agrawal, who has spent more than a decade in mission-driven environmental organizations as a lawyer, operator and finance executive, and is now turning to animal welfare as an extension of that mission.
